Washing machines usually fail before clothes dryers - due to the energy of the mechanical equipment used while working.
Simpler machines with fewer controls usually last longer than complex control washers without a repair.
Hot water is best used only for tough stains, releasing staining materials from the clothing with heat. Once emulsified or released, a cold rinse is fine.
Normal and delicate agitation prolongs fabric life.
Other conrol settings are of dubious value. Electronic control panels are expensive to replace, while traditional simpler controls last much longer in the vibrating mechanical environment of the clothes washing machine.
Regardless of the stickers on the machines, you have more impact on energy efficiency than anything else - selection of water temperature, the appropriate agitation level and matching the wash cycle to your needs can save much more energy than any other factor. The higher the water temperature and water level - the energy bill goes up. Use lower levels of cold water and the approprate wash cycle, the energy efficiency goes us and the bill goes down. The only other thing is, generally the cleaning action is better with hot water and the rinse is more thorough with more water - but sparing use can still get the job done.
